Most of us know someone affected by cancer - a family member, a friend, someone we love. This can be a very difficult time for everyone involved and MDHS want to provide our community with cancer care that takes away some of the anxiety that people face at this time. CancerCare is a project that MDHS has developed with the community to enhance cancer services.
The CancerCare project has several major sponsors, Maryborough Toyota and the Maryborough Branch of Bendigo Bank, who launched the CancerCare project with the significant donation of a car, to transport patients to and from appointments for treatment for cancer in Bendigo, Ballarat and Melbourne. Bendigo Bank has also donated and pledged an additional $133,000, which assisted the development of Merrin, MDHS' Palliative Care Suite, and for the future development of a Wellness & Support Centre.
The generous support of many other local businesses meant that the development of Merrin was completed sooner than expected. MDHS thanks all individual donors, community groups, philanthropic trusts, government grants, builders, plumbers and artists, and MDHS staff, as well as the students from Maryborough Education Centre who donated their time and efforts into transforming the private garden of the Palliative Care suite.
The next milestone of the CancerCare project is the development of a Wellness & Support Centre which will cater for people affected by cancer or diagnosed with other chronic illnesses. It will provide space for community information and education, specialist consultations and a variety of evidence based complementary therapy support.
