The Victorian Government is investing $115 million to redevelop and expand Maryborough and District Hospital.

The redevelopment includes a mix of new building and refurbishment works, including the construction of a new purpose-built facility to the south of the existing hospital.

After many years of planning, early works are underway and the hospital redevelopment is starting to take shape.

New hospital will bring many benefits

The state-of-the-art development will deliver:

• a new urgent care centre
• a 32-bed inpatient unit
• a new maternity unit and birthing suites
• two operating theatres and recovery spaces
• a day medical centre with clinical imaging, pharmacy and pathology services
• consultant suites
• reception area, and
• more car parking

When complete, staff at Maryborough and District Hospital will have bigger and better facilities to enable staff to treat an additional 4,000 patients every year.

The hospital redevelopment will provide integration with other primary health and community services and a better patient experience for better health outcomes.

New birthing suites and maternity beds will mean more local women can give birth in Maryborough, close to family and loved ones.

New facilities will provide a safe and improved working environment for staff to help recruit and retain a sustainable workforce, and continue teaching and training. The project is also expected to create approximately 345 industry jobs.

Modern design based on user needs

Architects Silver Thomas Hanley were appointed to design the redevelopment.

The artist impressions unveiled last year reveal a first look at the hospital’s exterior, main entry and new clinical spaces.

The modern design and layout combined with the co-location of services will improve patient flow and deliver better care.

The design team worked closely with MDHS to develop the design based on clinical service needs. The process included consultation with staff, patients and carers to consider the consumer and user experience, and feedback from a community survey to enhance the hospital experience.

The design team considered surrounding heritage buildings and the landscape in the design, and has consulted with representatives of the Dja Dja Wurrung community as part of the process.

Project delivery

The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority on behalf of the Department of Health, in partnership:

• Maryborough District Health Service
• Silver Thomas Hanley Architects (architects)
• SJ Weir (early works)
• Fairbrother (main works contractor).

The early works started in June 2022 and main construction started in July 2023.

The project is on track for progressive completion in late 2024, with the external works and landscaping expected to follow in 2025.
