Services provided include district nursing, hostel, nursing home, and respite care with visiting allied health staff providing podiatry, physiotherapy, maternal and child health care, dental technician and access to psychiatric services.
Nursing Home and HostelThe nursing home, built in 2003 consists of 20 high care beds which includes 1 respite bed. The Hostel or low care facility has 10 beds.
Prior to admission, potential residents and family members are orientated to the facility and encouraged to contribute information that will assist the transition from community life to residential care, and assist staff to provide excellent holistic care, optimise independence and maximise resident satisfaction.
Residents and relatives meetings are held bi-monthly with a resident chairperson presiding. These meetings have been very productive with several improvements coming from resident's suggestions. A monthly newsletter is sent out to residents and/or family members. Any person wishing to contribute to the newsletter is most welcome.
Social activities often involve community groups as well as residents, relatives and staff. Several residents also belong to the local senior citizens club and attend functions whenever possible.
District Nursing The Avoca district nursing service travels approximately 46,000 kms annually and provides community nursing, post acute care, hospital in the home, hospital to home care , palliative care and care to Veteran's Affairs clients. The district nurses network with other service providers to ensure appropriate services and adequate support is provided to assist clients to remain in their own homes as long as possible. Assessment services are provided by the Queen Elizabeth Centre, Ballarat, whose staff complete assessments for hostel and nursing home care, respite care and community care packages.
OutpatientsA well equipped outpatient area allows patients to visit for pathology, dressings, injections, blood pressure checks, health monitoring etc. Doctors from the Nightingale clinic in Maryborough provide 5 medical sessions per week with access to the outpatient’s area for minor procedures as required.
Community Car The community car and 2 community buses are co-ordinated by the health service receptionist who organises volunteer drivers for these vehicles.
Meals on Wheels Meals on wheels are cooked by the catering staff with volunteers delivering the meals 5 days per week.
Our Staff There are 40 full time and part time staff working at the Avoca campus with another 6 casual staff who provide holiday, long service and sick leave relief.
Staff access education either at sessions provided at the Avoca campus, Maryborough campus or externally on relevant topics of interest. Compulsory education for staff includes fire safety updates, CPR updates, bullying/harassment/equal opportunity, infection control, manual control and no lift.
Staff are extremely committed to the care of patients, residents and clients, providing an excellent standard of holistic care including physical, emotional, social and recreational care.
